Have students use the format of 1 topic sentence and 3 detail sentences to write about what they want to be when they grow up. They can use the back of their People and Their Jobs worksheet or a separate writing page. Topic sentence stem: When I grow up I want to be a … Detail 1: Detail 2: Detail 3:
This activity requires partners. Students pick a job without telling their partner and use a sentence stem to write a topic sentence about the job. For example: My job is to…. teach kids at a school. My job is to… cut hair at a barber shop. Students will then take turns asking each other yes or no questions about what their partner’s job could be. For example: Does your job use special tools? Do you work in an office? Each student is allowed to ask 20 questions and will then need to guess what their partner’s job could be. This activity can be repeated with each partner picking a different job and writing a new topic sentence. Using scratch paper or writing paper is advised for writing topic sentences and keeping track of question tallies.
