Step
01/21
Before we begin, you’ll need a piece of writing that you’re going
to edit and get ready to publish. Get the draft you’re working on
now. For Bird of the Year, get Draft (1) and Draft (2).
Step
02/21
Discuss: This sentence is actually two sentences. Can you find where
the missing period should go?
Step
03/21
Now, look through your writing. Check the end of every sentence
to make sure it ends with a period, question mark, or exclamation
mark. If it doesn’t, you can add one.
Step
04/21
Discuss: Where is the missing capital letter?
Step
05/21
Check the start of every sentence and all proper nouns, to make
sure they begin with a capital letter. If any don’t, you can change
the letter.
Step
06/21
Discuss: Where is the spelling mistake in this sentence?
Step
07/21
Now, get your writing. Use all the spelling strategies you know
to help you spell your words. You can also use resources in your
classroom to help you if you’re not sure how to spell a word.
Step
08/21
Discuss: What part of this sentence doesn’t sound right?
Step
09/21
Now, read your writing to make sure it sounds right. You can read
in your head or whisper-read to yourself. If you find a part that
doesn’t sound right, you can fix your sentence.
Step
10/21
Recopy your work in your best handwriting.
For Bird of the Year, get your final draft pages.

Congratulations! Your writing has leveled up!

If you need a natural stopping point:

Teachers: This is a natural stopping point. The next steps will guide students through folding and decorating their final writing submission. If you stop here, be sure to put all the VIPs somewhere safe!

If you’re continuing right now, go to the next slide.

Step
11/21
Get your supplies.
Step
12/21
Get your final draft first page. Write the name of your bird on the
line at the top. If you want, you can write it in large letters.
Step
13/21
Get all your draft pages. Put them in a neat stack on your desk
so the pages are all lined up.
Step
14/21
Fold all your pages together by lifting the bottom of your pages
up until they line up with the two fold lines like this. Press down
to make a strong crease.
Step
15/21
Rotate your draft pages so the fold is away from you. Then flip
them over on your desk. Double check that the folded part is
away from you on your desk.
Step
16/21
Carefully fold up the pages from the bottom until you see the
fold lines again. Press down to make a fold on the lines.
Step
17/21
Get your envelope page. Fold it in half on the line, like this.
Step
18/21
Place your envelope page on your desk like this and open it up.
Unfold all your draft pages and place them inside your cover.
Use a stapler to put a staple in each of the boxes.
Step
19/21
Use the fold lines to tuck your writing inside the cover.
Step
20/21
Use your coloring supplies to decorate the envelope.
Step
21/21
Count the number of students who wrote about each bird and
announce your class’s Bird of the Year.
