Before we begin, you’ll need a piece of writing that you’re going to
edit and get ready to publish. Get the draft you’re working on now.

Discuss: This sentence is actually two sentences. Can you find where
the missing period should go?

Now, look through your writing. Check every sentence to make
sure it ends with a period, question mark, or exclamation mark.
If it doesn’t, you can add one.

Discuss: Where are the missing capital letters?

Check the start of every sentence and all proper nouns to make
sure they begin with capital letters. If any don’t, you can change
the letter.

Now, get your writing. Use all the spelling strategies you know to
help you spell your words. You can also use resources in your
classroom to help you if you’re not sure how to spell a word.

Now, read your writing to check to make sure it sounds right. You can
read in your head or whisper-read to yourself. If you find a part that

Fill in the blanks with a title for your story and your name as
the author.

On the first page of your story, write the number 1 in the first circle
and the number 2 in the second circle. Continue writing numbers
until every circle has a number in it.

Fold each of your story draft pages in half on the dotted line.
Make sure your story is on the outside of the folded paper.

Fold your cover page in half on the dotted line, like this.

Stack your folded story draft pages in order with page 1 on the top.
Make sure they are in a neat pile with the edges lined up.

Open the cover page and place your stack of folded story draft
pages inside. Double check to make sure that when you lift the
title page, your page one is right side up and ready to read.

Use a stapler to put three staples on the staple icons. If you’re
waiting your turn for a stapler, you can start drawing a picture
for the cover of your book.

Fold over the top of your book on the solid line here. Press down to
make a strong crease, then unfold it.

On the back of your book, you can fill in the blanks to create an
about the author section. Then use your coloring supplies to make
a fun cover for your story.

Multiple copies of the Final Story worksheet can be printed for students who need additional writing space.

This lesson is separated into two parts and can be taught in two different sessions if needed. A natural stopping point is included after students edit their first draft.

Final drafts can be completed by hand or digitally. A digital worksheet is provided if you would like students to type their stories.
