Step
01/19
Before we begin, you’ll need a piece of writing that you’re going to
edit and get ready to publish. Get the draft you’re working on now.
For Saving Sea Turtles: Get your guidebook.
Step
02/19
Discuss: This sentence is actually two sentences. Can you find where
the missing period should go?
Step
03/19
Now, look through your writing. Check the end of every sentence to
make sure it ends with a period, question mark, or exclamation mark.
If it doesn’t, you can add one.
Step
04/19
Discuss: Where is the missing capital letter?
Step
05/19
Check the start of every sentence to make sure it begins with a
capital letter. If it doesn’t, you can change the letter.
Step
06/19
Discuss: Where is the spelling mistake in this sentence?
Step
07/19
Now, get your writing. Use all the spelling strategies you know to help
you spell your words. You can also use resources in your classroom
to help you if you’re not sure how to spell a word.
Step
08/19
Discuss: What part of this sentence doesn’t sound right?
Step
09/19
Now read your writing to check to make sure it sounds right. You can
read in your head, or whisper-read to yourself. If you find a part that
doesn’t sound right, you can fix your sentence.
Step
10/19
Recopy your work in your best handwriting.
For Saving Sea Turtles: Get two new copies of guidebook pages.

Congratulations! Your writing has leveled up!

If you need a natural stopping point:

Teachers: This is a natural stopping point. The next steps will repeat the steps for how to fold and assemble the guidebooks. If you stop here, be sure to put all the VIPs somewhere safe!

If you’re continuing right now, go to the next slide.

Step
11/19
Get your supplies.
Step
12/19
Fold the bottom of your booklet up, lining up the edge of the paper
with the thick line on both sides. Run your fingernail along the edge
to get a good crease. Do this for both guidebook pages.
Step
13/19
Unfold your paper and flip it over. Using the crease you already made,
fold on the same line the other way. Do this on both your guidebook
pages.
Step
14/19
Flip your papers to the front, keeping them folded. Fold all your
booklet pages in half with the lines on the inside.
Step
15/19
Add in page numbers 1 and 2 in the circles in the corners of your
pages. On your second worksheet, add in numbers 3 and 4.
Step
16/19
Get your guidebooks ready for your new copy. Take off the
paper clips and pull out your first draft pages. You’ll use the
same cover as before for your final copy.
Step
17/19
Get your two guidebook pages. Put the back of page 2 against the
back of page 3. Make sure they’re lined up. Put a paperclip on
the bottom of the pages in the middle, like this.
Step
18/19
Open your book cover. Hold your guidebook by the center pages.
Slide your guidebook into the flaps of the book cover you folded.
The center pages will stick out through the middle slit you cut.
Step
19/19
Close your guidebook. Secure your guidebook together by putting
paper clips on the front cover and back cover, like this.
