Step
01/19
Find a partner.
Step
02/19
Discuss with your partner:
Step
03/19
Get your supplies.
Step
04/19
Look at the Sentence Cut-Up sheet. Kayla and Taylor each wrote a
reason to celebrate Raccoon Day. Cut on dotted line #1, #2, and #3
to cut off these sentences. Cut out the ANDs. Set them to one side.
Step
05/19
Look at these sentences. Kayla and Taylor wish they could make them
into one sentence. Maybe they could use AND to put these two
thoughts together. Go to the next slide.
Step
06/19
Both sentences have the words “Raccoons are.” Underline the words
that are the same. Then, cut each sentence into two parts—with
all the underlined words on one part.
Step
07/19
Now you have four pieces. Two pieces have the exact same words on
them. Trade one of the pieces that says “Raccoons are” for an AND.
Discuss with your partner:
Step
08/19
Use your glue stick to glue your sentence onto the Happy Raccoon
Day poster, covering “Sentence #1.” Cut off any blank paper to make
it fit.
Step
09/19
Get your Sentence Cut-Up page. Cut on dotted lines #4 and #5.
You’ll have two strips of paper that say “They can.”
Step
10/19
Now we’ll show you three videos of raccoons being smart. You and
your partner will each write about one of the videos. Talk with your
partner and make sure you choose different videos.
Step
11/19
Your paper strip says, “They can.” That’s the start of a sentence.
Finish the sentence by writing in one of your examples of how
raccoons are smart.
Step
12/19
Underline the words that are the same in both sentences. Cut each
sentence into two—with underlined words on one part. Trade a piece
that says “They can” for an AND. Use AND to make a new sentence.
Step
13/19
Glue your sentence onto the Happy Raccoon Day poster, covering
“Sentence #2.”
Step
14/19
Get your Sentence Cut-Up page. Cut on dotted lines #6 and #7.
You’ll have two strips of blank paper. These are for your last two
sentences.
Step
15/19
Now we’ll show you three videos of raccoons being funny. You and
your partner will each write about one of the videos. Talk with your
partner and make sure you choose different videos.
Step
16/19
Talk with your partner about how you’ll begin your sentence about
raccoons being funny. You could both start your sentence with the
word “They,” or you could agree on a different sentence starter.
Step
17/19
Write your sentence. Then work with your partner to put your two
sentences together to make one sentence using the word AND.
Step
18/19
Use your glue stick to glue your sentence onto the Happy Raccoon
Day poster, covering “Sentence #3.”
Step
19/19
Compare what the poster looks like with and without the use of AND
to connect ideas.

TEACHERS: As a follow-up to this lesson, we suggest students write their own opinion poster, like the one they helped Taylor and Kayla make. Each student will write a paragraph supporting a cause the student feels passionately about, using supporting examples from their own experience. Ask students to use the word AND as we practiced.
