edit and get ready to publish. Get the draft you’re working on now.

the missing period should go?

Now, look through your writing. Check the end of every sentence to
make sure it ends with a period, question mark, or exclamation mark.
If it doesn’t, you can add one.

Check the start of every sentence and all proper nouns, to make sure
they begin with a capital letter. If any don’t, you can change the letter.

Now, get your writing. Use all the spelling strategies you know to help
you spell your words. You can also use resources in your classroom
to help you if you’re not sure how to spell a word.

Now, read your writing to check to make sure it sounds right.
You can read in your head or whisper-read to yourself. If you

festival you voted for in the box. Then do a quick sketch of yourself in
the empty circle underneath Tariq’s message.

Set up your desk so others can read your message. Put away
everything except your message, sticky notes, and a pencil.
Hold the pencil in your hand.

When your teacher tells you it’s time to go, quietly get up and choose
another desk to sit at. Bring your pencil with you.

Quietly read your classmate’s message.

one of the sticky notes to tell them something you liked about their
writing.

Prep Instructions
  • Students will need to bring their completed work from the previous lesson to this lesson.

  • This lesson is separated into two parts and can be taught in two different sessions if needed. A natural stopping point is included after students recopy their work but before they share their message.

  • A digital version of the final “Cast Your Vote” worksheet is available if you wish to have students type their final draft. Students will need to make a copy of the document. If time does not allow for recopying, students can edit their first draft and share their message with editing marks. If you choose not to have students recopy, no additional printouts are required for this lesson.

  • Students may share their message with a partner or with the class.
