About this Unit

This is an independent writing unit that supports students in practicing the informative writing skills they already have. Students write a five-paragraph research paper on bioluminescence. Students are guided through the writing process but independently take notes, create an outline, write and revise a draft, and create a bibliography.

Prep Instructions

We suggest teachers make sure each student has a designated location (such as a folder) to store papers between lessons.

Bioluminescence Research Packets should be printed and stapled prior to this lesson. Packets can be printed double sided to reduce paper usage.

If students are recopying by hand, you can print extra copies of the second page of the poster for students whose writing is longer than two pages. Students working digitally can make a copy of the second page of their poster.

This lesson is separated into two parts and can be taught in two different sessions if needed. A natural stopping point is included after students are given the instructions to write their final draft. The second part of the lesson guides students through crafting and decorating their final poster.
